By far the most notable change to the Mitsubishi Outlander is the grille, which has been virtually ripped off the front of the Mitsubishi Evolution and grafted on to the nose of the Outlander. But there have been other changes as well, with new interior fabrics, an altered dashboard, as well as new door mirrors, side mouldings and bonnet.

In the V6 version there’s an additional system, which Mitsubishi terms Super All Wheel Control. The system works unobtrusively and the driver can call up a display on the instrument panel that shows how much torque is being directed to each wheel. The MATTS system is operated by a knob between the front seats and it is very simple to switch between modes.

General Overview

The Outlander gets a new all wheel drive system, adapted from the MATTS system in the Mitsubishi Pajero. The system integrates 2WDS, 4WD, and 4WD centre diff lock, as well as Hill Start Assist and Active Traction Control.

Also new is a power upgrade for the engine in the V6 powered Outlander VR-X tested here. It produces seven more kilowatts than the previous version of the 3.0 litre V6, for a total of 172kW. The gearbox is a conventional six-speed automatic rather than the CVT gearbox found in the lower spec 2.4 litre four cylinder version.

The four wheel drive system works unobtrusively, but in normal driving conditions – even on wet roads – it is more fuel efficient to leave the Outlander in front wheel drive, although when the driver stamps hard on the throttle pedal from a standstill there is some torque steer and the nose of the vehicle weaves slightly to the right. It’s exactly the same sort of torque steer experienced in the Peugeot 4007, which is of course based on the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Additional Features

A particularly nice touch is the lower rear tailgate, which is counterweighted, so closing the tailgate is a simple one hand action. The seats have three point seat belts, which is a very important safety advance over lap only belts.

The changes to the Mitsubishi Outlander have only improved the vehicle, and while it takes a while to get used to the new nose the new Outlander only has to be parked next to the old model to see how the old version has aged.
